Policy on Rewrites

Policy on Rewrites

Posted by Admin | January 29, 2009 | Comments (4)

There recently might have been some confusion about the DS rewrite policy, so here is a quick refresher:
  1. When a copy editor requests a rewrite from a writer, that writer has three days to return it to the editor with changes.
  2. If writers miss the deadline, the article will expire from their queue and go back into the general pool of titles, ready for someone else to claim
  3. If writers send the rewrite back on time, the editor has two options: approve the article or reject the article.
  4. Writers only get one chance at a rewrite.
  5. If you have a question or comments about a copy editor's rewrite, please contact us at the following email addresses: editorialteam@demandstudios.com or demandhelp@earthlink.net
  6. The End

Hahahaha, Step number 6 is awesome! Going for an even number, perhaps?

Then why was my article rejected simply because I had to submit it again in order to ask the editor a question? It is the 19th and my article was not due until the 23rd. The editors are absolutely anonymous...I had to submit the article again in order to ask the editor a question under "Comments to the Editor" and then responded to the question and immediately rejected the article three days before the expiration date. The editor wouldn't even tell me who she/he was so that I could address them properly. Can someone please explain this to me because frustration doesn't even begin to describe what I am feeling right now. You have a team of VERY wonderful editors for the most part, and a few REALLY rotten apples that are putting a chink in the entire system. As a business professional, I am confident in saying...this needs to be addressed...it's important for Demand Studio's future sucess and/or failure.

I agree with Sydney. It appears that some of the editors are too unclear in their comments which is why the search for clarity should be allowed without penalty. After rewriting a couple of articles according to the editor's feedback (or what I thought the editor meant) my articles were still rejected for additional reasons that were unclear. For instance, it seems my latest article was rejected because I didn't use a particular word the editor would have used. I used a synonym instead. This seemed to be a bit unfair, and I plan to appeal. I think we should have the ability to communicate with editors regarding rewrites without having to actually submit the article for review. In some cases, how the writer interprets the editor's comments and what the editor actually intended to say can be worlds apart. There must be a way for writers to seek clarity from editors regarding feedback before an article is rejected. The truth is that some editors' comments are just as ambiguous as they claim our articles can be at times. I've been writing for DM since the time before this new interface was implemented - when writers were able to communicate with editors w/o the "one strike and you're out" penalty. I long for the same freedom of communication that these times allowed.

Yes...more chances for approval would be much appreciated. I hate thinking I did work for nothing.
