September Grant Winners!

September Grant Winners!

Congratulations to this month’s Grant winners!

Our Professional Resources grant goes to writer Laurie Brenner. With only a desktop to work from, it is difficult for Laurie to work while visiting her mother 600 miles away. Her mother turns 84 this month and with her health waning, it’s important to Laurie that she spends more time with her.  With a laptop, Laurie will now be able to access her work from anywhere and spend more quality time with her mother. We wish you all the best, Laurie!

Our first Work/Life Balance grant goes to writer Kirsty Barkan. Moving to the UK from Upstate New York two and a half years ago, Kirsty makes it a priority to travel home for the holidays. Usually able to save up enough money to travel home, things have been tighter this year and Kirsty was unsure if she’d be able to afford it. The grant will help her travel home and spend the holiday season with her family!

The second Work/Life Balance award goes to copy editor Elizabeth Gessaman, who recently moved back to Savannah, Georgia to be closer to her family. Forced to sell her car after moving, getting around Savannah has been a real challenge.  The grant will help Elizabeth purchase a bicycle, making it easier to get to and from the store, pay her bills, and get some exercise!

Our third Work/Life Balance winner is writer Jessica Morelock. As a single mother, Jessica doesn’t always get to spend as much time with her daughter as she would like. With the grant, Jessica will be able to take some time off and spend quality time with her daughter on a big night out. She plans to take her to the Mall of America where she can visit the American Girl store and see Dora at the amusement park!

The final Work/Life Balance award will go to writer and title flagger Bethany Jones. As a busy mom, the toughest thing for Bethany is balancing work with raising her kids. Her husband is Active Duty Air Force and away a lot for work. The grant money will help Bethany fund afternoon childcare for her son, allowing her to write for DMS and finish her first novel.

Remember, if you didn’t win this time, you can apply twice more with the same application. It was a tough decision to select this month’s winners, so don’t get discouraged.

Please join us in congratulating the winners!

There are no words to accurately describe what I felt when I received notice of this award. Most of my feelings are wrapped up in emotions that only those without their parents can attest to. My mother, 84 this week, has been on death’s door too often to count in the last few years, and I’ve been hamstrung from visiting her this year by a computer that keeps me planted in one place.

In March, I started working freelance full-time and haven’t been able to get away to visit my mother because I couldn’t take the time away from work to do so. Even though we both live in the same state – California -- she’s at the bottom and I’m closer to the top; California spans almost an entire coastline, which makes the journey by car a full day’s journey.

With laptop in hand, I am free to spend time with her AND work, without having to miss a step. Just knowing I can take my work with me when I go to visit her relieves a lot of the tension I’ve been dealing with. Growing up, I didn’t always appreciate what my mother went through raising me and my brothers and sisters. But when you become a mother, and then a grandmother yourself, you develop a new perspective. My mother helped make me the person I am today and for that, I am grateful. To Demand Studios I offer my sincere heartfelt thanks by providing me with this laptop grant award, so that I may still enjoy my mother while I have her with me.

Thank you,
Laurie

So very many thanks to Demand Studios for this award! Savannah is an amazing city that is incredibly bike-friendly due to its squares, and I can't wait to explore it even further than I already have.

And just to echo Laurie's sentiment, I am truly grateful for Demand which has allowed me to work from the comfort of my home regardless of where I live. It has definitely been a blessing, indeed.

Many thanks again.

Thanks to Demand for this award. I would say that more difficult titles that require large amounts of research have slowed my part-time writing significantly. Instead of coming out ahead with this grant, it has helped make up for some of the loss. With that being said, I was able to take a few days out of my normal schedule to volunteer in my daughter's Pre-K class which I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. The Mall of America/American Girl Doll Store is going to have to wait :(

Thanks again,
Jessica M.
