Update to References Section in Format Guidelines
Hi all –

We have updated the References section in all of the guidelines, so please be sure to check them out. To summarize, we included information outlining the qualifications writers need when writing simple articles that may not render a reference. As we’ve repeatedly said though, even if you have expertise in an area and are the authority on the topic, you still should cite a reference if possible.

Check out the updated guidelines for more information.

Thanks,
Jennifer

Doesn't the last sentence contradict what several of us have been told by Richard and Eve? such as processed articles which aren't fact based?

Here is a conundrum I recently thought of. The Review format requires us to have first person experience of the thing to be reviewed. I've recently done a couple where I went out to the place for the sole purpose of writing the article, which is pretty standard for journalism. It's not expertise, but original research. I can understand fixing up a link anyway, but isn't it a bit odd to do it just for the sake of form? It's putting a Reference in as a white lie.

We really need a hard and fast rule about articles that request "ideas" - specifically craft and gardening articles. The style guide says sources are not needed if you are "expert", but you don't necessarily need to be an "expert" to have an idea about, for example, how to keep kids occupied when it's raining.
