What is Demand Studios?

Demand Studios is Demand Media's production house and distributes text and video content to over 60 online media properties that are visited by more than 50 million people every month. We recruit freelance writers and videographers, match them with content assignments, and offer them the opportunity to reach a passionate audience of millions and make money for the articles and videos they create.

Where will my content appear?

Demand Studios powers over 60 of Demand Media's properties ranging from casual games to outdoor sports, knowledge, entertainment and more. Depending on its focus, the content you create could appear on any of those properties or on the properties of our distribution partners to maximize its exposure. We are also adding new properties in categories we know people are passionate about, so stay tuned for even more potential opportunities for your content to be seen!

What is Expert Village?

Expert Village is the world’s largest how-to video website and has been working for years with thousands of independent filmmakers to create expert how-to video content. Expert Village is a Demand Media company and powers the Demand Studios filmmaker program.

As an Expert Village Filmmaker, you can:

Why is the filmmaker application form on Expert Village?

Once I submit my application, how long will it take for me to get an assignment?

Once we receive your application, our editorial team will review it. We might not have assignments that fit your skills right away, but if your application qualifies you as a writer, we will keep your contact information so we can reach out to you when we do.

Are there fees to join Demand Studios?

There is no charge to apply for either the Demand Studios Writer or the Filmmaker programs.

How do I submit content?

Our editorial team will process your application. Once your application has been accepted, if our editorial team sees writing assignments that fit your skill set, they will contact you with a description of the assignment. If you choose to perform the assignment, all the details on how to produce and submit the content will be provided to you.

How and when do I get paid?

For assignments that are assigned through the Demand Studios website, payment will be made through PayPal. You will either need to set up a personal account with PayPal or give us the information for an existing account. Once set up, we will deposit your payments directly into your personal PayPal account. For more information on PayPal, visit www.paypal.com. There is currently no charge to sign up for a personal, non-premium PayPal account.

Some of our assignments are made by our editorial team by email instead of through the Demand Studios website. If you receive an assignment like this, your editor will ask you to submit a paper invoice, and you will be paid by check.

How much will I be paid?

The payment you receive depends on the type of assignment we give you. The pay range for each type of content will vary depending on the nature of the assignment and the distribution it will be given.

How soon will I get paid after I submit each article?

You will get paid following acceptance by us of each assignment. Payments via PayPal are usually processed every Friday and payment is remitted to you shortly after processing.

If you are asked to submit a paper invoice for you work, we will process the invoice upon receipt.

Do I retain any rights to my content?

Since the work product that you create for Demand Studios is a work-made-for-hire under the US Copyright Act, Demand Studios will own all rights to the content. The rights details are included in the Contributors Agreement you enter into with Demand Media before completing any writing assignment. Carefully read the full contract details of the Contributors Agreement before participating in the Demand Studios Writers Program.

Can I edit my content?

On occasion, we may ask you to make changes to content you submit to us under an assignment before we accept it as final. Once we accept your content, Demand Studios has a team of editors that may review your content and optimize it for the web. As the owner of your contribution, Demand Studios alone is allowed to edit it or change it.

What topics can I submit content on?

Once you are approved and have entered into our Contributors Agreement, Demand Studios will either suggest content assignments that match your skills or you can pick assignments for which you are qualified from our assignment list. If you pick an assignment, our editorial team will make sure you are qualified for it before you can start.

In what languages do you accept content?

For now, Demand Studios only powers English-speaking sites, so we will only need content in English. We may expand to include assignments in other languages in the future.

Can I delete published content?

Once your content is accepted by Demand Studios, we own it and you will not have the opportunity to change or delete it.

What are the content submission guidelines?

The content submission guidelines may vary for each assignment, depending on which kinds of websites your content will appear. Our editorial team will share the specific guidelines with you as part of the information provided about each assignment.

Once I submit content, how long before it is published?

Timing for publishing depends on where your content is distributed. For some of our websites it might be almost instantaneous. For others it can take up to a few weeks. In some cases, we may elect not to ever publish your content on a Demand Media website, or it could appear on one of our distribution partners' websites.

Can I submit images with my content?

Some writing assignments might require images. Our editorial team will give you the specific guidelines for each assignment before you start.

How can I change my PayPal email address?

To change your PayPal email address on Demand Studios, log on to Demand Studios and click the "Tax Information" link in the User Menu. You can update and confirm your PayPal email address here.

What does it mean if my Demand Studios Writers Program account states that payment is pending?

If your payment is pending, that means Demand Studios is currently processing your payment.

What does it mean if my payment is on hold?

This means Demand Studios is waiting to send your payment to PayPal. Please contact a Demand Studios support representative if you have questions.

What does it mean if my payment has failed?

This indicates that Demand Studios was unable to send funds to your PayPal account. You may want to make sure you entered the correct email address for your PayPal account with Demand Studios. If the account is correct, please contact PayPal for assistance.

What does it mean if my payment has been completed?

This is a good thing. This means your payment has been processed and funds should have been deposited into your PayPal account.

My Demand Studios Writers Program account says my payment was completed, but I still haven't received the money in my PayPal account.

How can I change my account information?

You can update your personal account information by clicking on the "Account Information" link in the User Menu. It is your obligation to keep your account information updated and current in this form.

What are the tax requirements and implications of participation in the Demand Studios Writers Program?

You'll need to supply basic tax information to Demand Studios. Don't worry; your tax information will be encrypted for security purposes. If you are paid more than $10 for the calendar year, Demand Studios will have a 1099 form processed and sent to the IRS on your behalf. A copy of the 1099 form will also be sent to you. However, you must not be subject to backup withholdings in order to qualify for participation in the Demand Studios Writers Program. It is your obligation to keep your tax information updated and current in this form.

Do you enroll writers who live outside of the United States?

The Demand Studios Writers Program currently only enrolls writers that are either legal residents of the United States or United States citizens.

I am not a citizen or legal resident of the United States, but I do have a PayPal email address. Can I be paid?

No. The Demand Studios Writers Program is not available for non-US citizens or non-US residents at this time.

I'm under 18 years old. Can I be paid?

No. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in the Demand Studios Writers Program. We're not able to send your payment to a third-party PayPal account (i.e. parents, guardian) either. Once you're 18, be sure to enroll in the program!

Payment was sent to the wrong email address, what can I do?

If payment was sent to an email address not attached to your PayPal account, add that email address to your account by clicking on the "Tax Information" link in the User Menu. Once you update that information, funds should appear in your PayPal account.

Are there agreements that I must enter into to participate in the Demand Studios Writers Program?
