Life of a Demand Media Writer
The Demand Media Difference
At Demand Media, we pride ourselves on the quality and excellence of our writers. We aim to offer our freelancers some of the benefits and perks one might expect from a full-time job, including:
- Access to health insurance
- Paid memberships to writing organizations
- Grants to pursue other creative projects
- Opportunities for advancement
- And many more!
Compensation
With a transparent payment process, we also offer our writers the ability to supplement other freelance jobs and work more or less when they need to. All pay rates are stated up front and paid out upon a copy editor's approval of an article. Payments can range from $5 to $25 or more, depending on the length and subject of the article, with the average writer earning $20 per hour.
Professional Community
As a Demand Media writer you will gain access to a supportive community of writers and other professionals. Our writers enjoy interacting with each other through our forums, blogs, and in person at events.
Tips for Applying
Our writers come from a variety of educational and occupational backgrounds. We generally look for one of the following, so make sure your resume speaks to at least one:
- College degree in journalism or related field
- Writing or journalism experience
- Overall expertise in a certain area
(ex. health, automotive, travel, etc)
We also require all writers to submit a writing sample. Writing samples are for application purposes only and we accept both published and unpublished pieces.
Think carefully about what you choose to submit, as our editors read all samples thoroughly. Here are some guidelines:
- Grammar matters – avoid sending samples with obvious spelling and grammatical mistakes.
- Think "encyclopedia" – Our articles are informative, so we want to know you can write in a clear, concise style.
- Showcase your skills – Overly technical papers, poems and colloquial blogs do not allow us to properly judge your writing ability.
Don't have a writing sample? Compose a quick How-To on something you know. Think about guiding a stranger through a project or explaining a problem and the solution.
